How to Apply for a Visa or Travel Authorisation
for New Zealand

Your ultimate guide for short-stay entry options

Before you begin

New Zealand offers two main pathways for short visits. The correct option depends entirely on the passport you hold, the purpose of your visit, and the length of time you plan to stay. Some travellers qualify for an NZeTA, while others must apply for a Visitor Visa through the online system.

Eligibility for the NZeTA is strictly limited to passport holders from visa-waiver countries. Travellers from non-waiver countries must apply for a Visitor Visa.

Note: The NZeTA now covers most passport holders from countries and territories included in New Zealand’s visa-waiver programme. Anyone whose passport is not on the waiver list cannot use the NZeTA and must apply for a Visitor Visa instead.

This guide outlines the overall process so you understand what to expect and how to prepare for your application.

Entry options for short stays
1. NZeTA

NZeTA is available only to travellers from visa-waiver countries who are visiting for tourism, short business activities, cruise travel or family visits. It is completed online before travel and is an authorisation, not a visa. Travellers must still meet entry conditions upon arrival in New Zealand.

NZeTA visits are limited to short stays. Travellers may make multiple visits while the authorisation remains valid, provided each stay meets the permitted duration.

2. Visitor Visa

A Visitor Visa is required for anyone whose passport is not covered by the Visa-Waiver Programme. This visa is suitable for tourism, visiting friends or family, certain short business activities and short courses. It must be applied for online before travelling.

Who can apply

Each entry option has its own eligibility rules. You will generally need:

  • A valid passport

  • Passport nationality that matches the eligibility criteria for the NZeTA or Visitor Visa

  • A genuine purpose of visit that fits the permitted reasons

  • Sufficient funds for the trip and return travel

  • No issues that would prevent entry under New Zealand immigration rules

Eligibility for NZeTA depends entirely on the passport you hold. Even with an approved NZeTA, entry is granted only after border checks on arrival. Travellers who already have a valid New Zealand visa or a residence class visa do not need an NZeTA.

Documents required

Document requirements vary by nationality and the purpose of your visit. Common requirements include:

  • A clear copy of the passport photo page

  • A recent photo

  • A working email address

  • A debit/credit card for the application fee

  • Supporting documents explaining your travel purpose, plans or personal circumstances

The online system may request extra information based on what you submit.

How to apply
Step 1: Confirm the correct entry option

Visit the official New Zealand immigration website to verify which pathway applies to your passport.

Visitor Visa information: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/visas/

The NZeTA scheme applies to most visa-waiver travellers, including those arriving on cruise ships. It is important to confirm whether you need one, even if you have visited New Zealand before without prior approval.

Step 2: Complete the online form

Provide your personal, passport and travel details. Make sure all information matches your passport exactly.

Step 3: Upload your documents

Submit your photograph and any supporting documents required for your situation.

Step 4: Submit your application

Follow the online instructions to complete the process and submit your application.

Step 5: Receive your decision

You will receive confirmation electronically. Keep a copy on your device or as a printout.

Processing time, validity and stay limits

Processing times vary. NZeTA is usually valid for multiple short visits within its overall validity period. Each visit must stay within the permitted length. Visitor Visa stay periods differ from NZeTA stays and may allow longer visits depending on the visa granted.

Important things to remember
  • Confirm whether your passport is from a visa-waiver country

  • NZeTA is only available to travellers from waiver countries

  • Travellers from non-waiver countries must apply for a Visitor Visa
